Does an unmodified audit opinion guarantee there is no fraud?

Intermediate

Answer

No. An unmodified (clean) opinion means the auditor obtained reasonable, not absolute, assurance that the statements are free of material misstatement. Due to inherent limitations—sampling, concealment, collusion, management override—some fraud (especially immaterial or well-hidden) may exist undetected. The opinion is not a guarantee against fraud.
Real-world example A clean opinion doesn't rule out a cleverly concealed collusive fraud that fell below the threshold of the audit's procedures.
